Skills and Competencies
- Applied experience collecting, processing, and using data to solve a problem or answer a question is required as successful candidates will be drawing upon this skillset in their daily work.
- Possess a working knowledge of a computer programming language (examples include SQL, R/tidyverse, Python, Microsoft Excel, Julia, and Fortran) with an adaptability and willingness to learn new languages/software as required. The team currently primarily uses R/tidyverse and SQL in day to day work, so experience with these is particularly desirable.
- Be driven and committed, demonstrating self-motivation as well as the strong team working and communication skills necessary to collaborate with colleagues in different time zones and on various partner teams.
- Possess critical thinking and problem-solving skills, as well as an attention to detail that will enable candidates to successfully undertake independent project work.
- Be comfortable working independently in a dynamic environment with tasks that sometimes span across multiple concurrent projects.
- Basic understanding of artificial intelligence concepts, with curiosity and enthusiasm for learning how AI tools - such as Copilot and ChatGPT - can be used to improve processes and drive efficiency.
- Experience with or interest in the following topics is desirable given their relevance to the core work of the team:
- the Re/Insurance business domain/catastrophe modeling.
- Database management/working with relational databases (SQL).
- Moody's RMS products (e.g. RiskLink, Risk Modeler, Intelligent Risk Platform).
- Data engineering, data analytics, data science.
- Collaborative code development using version control software (e.g., GitHub).
- Kubernetes
Education
- A Bachelor's/undergraduate degree is required, preferably in Climate Science, Meteorology, Hydrology, Geophysics, Earth Sciences, Geology, Natural Resources, Geographic Information Systems, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, Data Science or a similar discipline.
- A Master's or PhD degree is desirable.
Responsibilities
This person will work closely with our team and colleagues in Model Development, client facing, and other teams to provide insight into new models, and ensure their readiness for release to clients.
- Work with and learn from senior colleagues to develop knowledge and skills across a broad range of topics:
- Develop a grasp of the fundamental science and methodological philosophies underpinning Moody's RMS catastrophe models and how they are developed. Learn to apply this knowledge to interpreting model output and communicating key conclusions.
- Become comfortable working with the team's custom data infrastructure and using it to produce modelling output that effectively communicates key modelling stories.
- Invest time in learning about data cleansing, data analysis/data analytics, programming, tool development, data pipelines, and other skills that will enhance your ability to contribute to the success of the team
- Contribute to the success of Product Acceptance Testing, independently driving forward your own work while also collaborating with colleagues on our team and partner teams to and provide insight into new and updated catastrophe models, eliminate potential surprises for our clients, and provide client facing teams with collateral that enables them to successfully support the models for our clients.
- Develop skills that will enable you to successfully present insights from your data analysis work to colleagues within the team and on partner teams.
- Learn about and eventually contribute to other lines of work that the Model Analytics assists the Insurance Solutions team with (e.g. Regulatory work, assisting loss calibration efforts in support of model development, etc.)
About the team
Our Model Analytics team is responsible for adding efficiency and insight throughout the model development cycle and increasing the value of the models Moody's Insurance Solutions brings to market by: eliminating surprises; telling the story of model releases; and sharing our expertise in large scale data pipelining/processing, analytics, and reporting tools. By joining our team, you will be part of exciting work in our New York office.
For US-based roles only: the anticipated hiring base salary range for this position is $90,200.00 - $130,850.00, depending on factors such as experience, education, level, skills, and location. This range is based on a full-time position. In addition to base salary, this role is eligible for incentive compensation. Moody's also offers a competitive benefits package, including not but limited to medical, dental, vision, parental leave, paid time off, a 401(k) plan with employee and company contribution opportunities, life, disability, and accident insurance, a discounted employee stock purchase plan, and tuition reimbursement.
