ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Exercise independent judgment in coordination with the direction of the Director of Finance and Reporting, the Senior Accountant will independently perform the full range of professional accounting work for the CSULB Research Foundation business unit. Work assignments include, but are not limited to:
Maintaining accounting data;
Reconciling balance sheet and investment accounts;
Interfacing the Empeon payroll data file into PeopleSoft;
Preparing and reviewing journal entries;
Processing accounts receivable invoices;
Maintaining the aging report, sending reminders and requesting payment of outstanding balances;
Reviewing and communicating with deficit fund owners how to correct deficit balance;
Processing KKJZ radio station transactions:
Providing back-up for the preparation of financial statements;
Completing the month-end and year-end financial processes;
Providing back-up for the preparation of the Research Foundation operating budget;
Providing consultative services to Research Foundation programs and campus administrators in resolving accounting issues;
Acting as back-up for the coordination of annual financial audits;
Recommending changes in the accounting system and/or procedures;
Ensuring that assigned accounting program activities are carried out in accordance with established policies and procedures and generally accepted accounting standards;
Cross training within other classifications is required;

Requirements
EDUCATION, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Bachelor's degree in a related field and five (5) years of progressively responsible professional accounting experience which shall have provided a comprehensive understanding of the accounting operations of a non-profit organization, college, or other organization of comparable scope and complexity;
Governmental accounting/fund accounting experience, desired;
Experience in accounting for grants and contracts, preferred;
Demonstrate thorough knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and practices, financial theory, contract and grant accounting, budgetary accounting, statistical and graphic presentation of data;
Possess advanced skills with Microsoft Excel and Word or equivalent;
Possess working knowledge of governmental accounting methods an related laws, rules and regulations;
Ability to demonstrate advanced reconciliation skills required;
Ability to apply accounting principles to the analysis of complex accounting issues;
Ability to analyze and interpret accounting data, prepare clear/accurate financial statements and reports;
Ability to utilize problem-solving techniques in finding solutions to complex accounting problems;
Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures;
Possess solid knowledge of sound business practices, decision making skills and recommendations regarding accounting activities;
Demonstrate strong organizational skills and be extremely detail oriented with very strong follow-through;
Possess strong dependability, reliability and self-motivation;
Possess strong customer service skills, exceptional time management skills and work ethic;
Demonstrate effective, clear, professional communication (both verbal and written);
Ability to work with all levels of staff and administration;
Ability to learn and apply policies and procedures of the organization;

Proficient in Word, Excel, report writing, and accounting systems;

Ability to apply independent judgement, discretion and initiative in performing job responsibilities;

Demonstrate the ability to coordinate many different project tasks, determine relative importance of each, prioritize and set appropriate deadlines to complete all tasks accordingly;
Additional work time may be required during the Research Foundation financial audit period (May – August annually) and other critical times.
Must be able to accept constructive criticism, prioritize workload, be dependable, behave professionally and interact positively with others. This position is employed through the CSULB Research Foundation. Employment is at-will.
The CSULB Research Foundation Finance and Accounting team currently operates on a hybrid work schedule that requires employees to work in the office three (3) days per week as scheduled by the Director and remotely two (2) days per week. This schedule is only available to those in positions where there is adequate remote work available. Our hybrid work model is reviewed regularly, and as such, may be changed or stopped at any time for any reason at the employer’s discretion. Newly hired employees will be required to initially come into the office every day until they have undergone proper training within their position and are approved for remote work.
POST OFFER BACKGROUND CHECK REQUIREMENT
A post offer background check (including a reference and criminal records check) must be completed, and the individual cleared, before they can start work with the CSULB Research Foundation. No information will be required prior to the offer of employment. Once an offer of employment is made, failure to complete the background check and receive clearance may affect the application status of a new hire individual and/or the continued employment of a current CSULB Research Foundation employee who has applied for/moved into a new position. Individuals working with minor children and/or the elderly will be required to renew their live scan fingerprinting and be cleared every twelve (12) months. Information obtained through the background check does not automatically disqualify an individual from employment.
COMPENSATION RANGE: $3,958.34 - $4,166.67 per pay period (24) / $95,000-$100,000 per year.
