The opportunity
Handling tax in such a large, sophisticated organization takes more than just a technical understanding of current tax practices. As a Sales and Use Tax Senior Manager, we will look to you to lead engagements on a wide range of tax areas and processes, devising strategic outcomes to some very complex issues. As a Senior Manager in Indirect Tax, you will advise on regulatory changes, assess and support compliance and reporting needs for both public and private entities. You'll develop and implement strategies, operating models, and compliance frameworks to manage indirect taxes throughout the tax lifecycle, increasing operational efficiency and ensuring regulatory requirements are met. Key responsibilities include identifying opportunities for tax optimization, credits and refund recovery, and exposure reduction; managing indirect tax strategies, compliance, remediation processes, controversies, and corrective filings; and supporting tax process review and technology transformation to enhance service offerings.
Your key responsibilities
As a Senior Manager, your core purpose is to lead the delivery of complex processes, solutions, and projects, maintaining a strong focus on quality and risk management while navigating operational and organizational dynamics. You'll be accountable for program and project management, resource planning, and engagement economics, and will provide leadership and direction to teams with broad visibility. This role presents the challenge of solving complex problems, driving innovation, and delivering thought leadership in a dynamic environment. You'll learn to manage client relationships, revenue generation, and commercial engagements, while developing deep insight into indirect tax best practices. Regular travel required to meet external client needs.
Key responsibilities include:
- Exercising judgment in selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.
- Developing solutions to complex problems and recommending changes to policies and procedures.
- Establishing procedures that impact your immediate work area and potentially the broader business function.
- Analyzing an evolving portfolio of complex tax operations to provide meaningful business insights
- Identifying potential opportunities and risks and communicating these to our clients
- Learning and researching current market trends, to maintain your credibility as a trusted advisor
- Developing clear, intelligent plans and approaches to improve our clients' tax activities
- Connecting with our clients about their business operations and building long-lasting relationships to tailor your advice to their specific needs
- Leading a motivated team of professionals, guaranteeing they have the skills, knowledge and opportunities to reach their full potential
- Understanding EY's suite of services to connect our clients with other professionals who can assist in areas beyond sales and use tax.

- Responsible for the effective management and delivery of complex processes, solutions, and projects, with a focus on quality and risk management.
- Provides leadership and direction to teams, achieving performance objectives and driving innovation.
- Applies deep insight and best practices to solve complex problems and deliver thought leadership.
- Exercises judgment in selecting methods and developing solutions to complex challenges.
- Recommends changes to policies and establishes procedures that impact the business function.
- Bachelor's degree required in Accounting, Finance, Business or a related discipline; master's degree preferred.
- CPA license, state bar membership, certification as a member of the Institute for Professionals in Taxation or CMI designation is required
- 8+ years of professional knowledge in a broad range of sales and use tax processes, concepts and tools
- Significant experience managing budgets, people and projects
- A proven record of excellence in a professional services or tax organization
- Technical writing and research experience in a tax context
- The ability to prioritize when working on multiple complex projects
- Strong influencing skills, and the confidence to question existing processes
- Exposure to business development
- Willingness to travel as needed, and working in a balanced hybrid environment
- Demonstrated expertise in tax legislation and impact assessment.
- Experience with indirect tax refund and recovery review.
- Proficiency in tax planning and optimization.
- Knowledge of audit quality and remediation techniques.
- Ability to drive process improvement and optimization.
- Experience in operating model design and analysis.
- Credit modelling capabilities.
- Strong understanding of data quality and accounting principles and standards.
- Skills in risk mitigation and data analysis and interpretation.
- Familiarity with tax compliance and reporting requirements.
- Ability to use data visualization and storytelling to communicate insights.
- Application and tool analysis proficiency.
- Awareness of sustainability drivers and mega trends.
- Business skills in building and managing relationships, client trust and value, and communicating with impact.

- We offer a comprehensive compensation and benefits package where you'll be rewarded based on your performance and recognized for the value you bring to the business. The base salary range for this job in all geographic locations in the US is $135,000 to $308,500. The base salary range for New York City Metro Area, Washington State and California (excluding Sacramento) is $162,100 to $350,500. Individual salaries within those ranges are determined through a wide variety of factors including but not limited to education, experience, knowledge, skills and geography. In addition, our Total Rewards package includes medical and dental coverage, pension and 401(k) plans, and a wide range of paid time off options.
- Join us in our team-led and leader-enabled hybrid model. Our expectation is for most people in external, client serving roles to work together in person 60% of the time over the course of an engagement, project or year.
- Under our flexible vacation policy, you'll decide how much vacation time you need based on your own personal circumstances.
