State and Local Tax (SALT) Accountant, Office of the Chief Financial Officer - Georgetown University

Located in a historic neighborhood in the nation's capital, Georgetown offers rigorous academic programs, a global perspective, exciting ways to take advantage of Washington, D.C., and a commitment to social justice. Our community is a tight knit group of remarkable individuals interested in intellectual inquiry and making a difference in the world.

Requirements

State and Local Tax (SALT) Accountant, Office of the Chief Financial Officer - Georgetown University

Job Overview

The State and Local Tax (SALT) Accountant has an integral role in the Tax Department's compliance function through the preparation of the University's state and local tax returns and other filings, under the supervision of the Sr. Director of Tax.

With the University's expanded presence in the majority of states in the coming year, the SALT Accountant assists with the Tax Department's analysis of new state and local filing requirements and will manage all compliance areas (reporting, payments, extensions, etc.) for these states and localities throughout the year. They assist with tax research to maintain the University's compliance with the tax rules and regulations of the many jurisdictions in which we operate. Some of the state filing obligations under the SALT Accountant's purview include sales tax, property tax, unclaimed property retrieval and reporting, and state charitable registrations.

This crucial role supports the University's ability to maintain its tax-exempt status by complying with current state and local tax requirements and thinking critically to recognize changing filing requirements as the University expands its operations into new jurisdictions. As a part of the Tax Department, they provide a window to the inner-workings of the University's financial operations and have a direct financial impact on the University's ability to fulfill its exempt mission.

Work Interactions

The University's Tax Department is housed within the Office of the Chief Financial Officer. Its current staff includes the AVP of Tax, Senior Director of Tax, and Senior Tax Accountant.

Reporting the Senior Director of Tax, the SALT Accountant supports the robust state and local tax compliance processes. Because tax compliance requires a knowledge of the operations across various departments within the University, interaction and collaboration with members of other departments is a key function of this role. As well, communication with the University's external service providers is also an important aspect of the SALT Accountant's duties.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting from an accredited college/university
  • 5+ years of public accounting experience in Tax
  • Fundamental knowledge of tax law and accounting principles in order to accurately report and document the University's tax and financial information to various jurisdictions
  • Experience preparing state and local tax forms
  • Experience conducting tax research
  • Strong organizational and oral/written communication skills
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills
  • Ability to work independently and in team settings

Preferred qualification
