Description
Your OpportunityThe Senior Cloud Engineer will have the opportunity to serve as a technical leader within Charles Schwab's Cloud Engineering organization, driving the design, delivery, and continuous improvement of enterprise-scale cloud solutions. This role combines deep hands-on engineering expertise with senior-level leadership responsibilities-including guiding scrum teams through planning and execution, coordinating cross-team technical initiatives, and designing repeatable processes that raise the engineering rigor of the broader organization. The ideal candidate is a cloud practitioner who has grown into a leadership role: someone who delivers high-quality results through others as effectively as through their own work.
What you are good at
- Technical Leadership and Team Empowerment - You lead engineering teams through Agile/Scrum ceremonies (sprint planning, daily stand-ups, backlog refinement, PI planning) and drive predictable, high-quality delivery. You empower team members to own decisions and execution within their scope, mentor junior engineers, and create a culture where the team consistently delivers without requiring manager-directed intervention.
- Cross-Team Coordination and Dependency Management - You identify and manage technical dependencies across multiple teams and initiatives, sequence work to protect delivery timelines, and facilitate alignment with stakeholders and partner teams across the organization.
- Process Design and Engineering Rigor - You design repeatable, scalable engineering processes-migration playbooks, deployment patterns, testing strategies-that can be adopted beyond your immediate team. You raise the standard of execution through structured approaches to planning, implementation, and risk management.
- Measurement-Driven Results Orientation - You set ambitious goals, define performance baselines, and use quantitative metrics to track progress and demonstrate business impact. You translate technical outcomes into terms stakeholders understand (e.g., engineering hours saved, throughput improvements, risk reduction).
- Cloud Architecture and Infrastructure as Code - You have deep experience designing and implementing cloud infrastructure using Terraform and related IaC tooling, with a focus on efficiency, security, modularity, and maintainability across large-scale environments.
- Requirements Management - You drive the full requirements lifecycle: decomposing epics into well-defined user stories with clear acceptance criteria, maintaining backlog readiness, estimating capacity, and ensuring alignment between delivery commitments and organizational priorities.
- Communication and Stakeholder Alignment - You communicate effectively across technical and non-technical audiences, providing clear status updates, facilitating planning sessions, and surfacing risks and tradeoffs proactively. You have strong listening skills and ask great questions.
- Adaptability - You thrive in a fast-paced environment across multiple time zones and locations, can context-switch between hands-on engineering and leadership responsibilities, and have a willingness to learn and grow.
What you have
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 7 years' experience working within Enterprise IT.
- Minimum of 4 years' highly technical experience with cloud design and operations in Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and/or Amazon Web Services (AWS).
- 3+ years' experience with Infrastructure as Code tools, primarily Terraform, including module development, pipeline design, and state management at scale.
- 3+ years' experience with scripting and automation tools (Python, JavaScript, Bash, PowerShell, etc.).
- 1+ years' experience serving as a technical lead or senior individual contributor responsible for delivery execution, sprint/PI planning, and cross-team coordination within an Agile/Scrum environment.
- Demonstrated experience leading or coordinating large-scale cloud migration or modernization initiatives involving multiple teams and stakeholders.
- Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Cyber Security, related degree OR equivalent practical experience.
- Experience designing and executing cloud infrastructure migrations with zero or minimal customer impact, including cutover planning, rollback strategies, and stakeholder communication.
- Experience designing repeatable engineering processes and patterns (e.g., migration playbooks, module standards, testing frameworks) that are adopted by peer teams.
- Experience mentoring and developing engineers, including structured knowledge transfer, code review practices, and guided delegation of ownership for complex initiatives.
- Experience defining or implementing security controls and compliance procedures aligned with NIST, CIS, or similar standards, including audit-readiness documentation.
- Extensive experience building and managing infrastructure through GitOps workflows, enabling consistent, auditable cloud environments and rapid, reliable deployments in GCP and/or AWS.
- Working proficiency with SCM and DevOps tool suites (e.g., Git, Bitbucket, GitHub, GitHub Actions, Jenkins).
- Google Professional Cloud certification, AWS Solutions Architect certification, or similar is a plus.
- Experience in the Financial Services industry or a highly regulated environment is a plus.
In addition to the salary range, this role is also eligible for bonus or incentive opportunities.
